Mario Ayala and Alfonso Gonzalez Jr.

Collaborative and individual works from 2020–2026 by Los Angeles artists Mario Ayala and Alfonso Gonzalez Jr., presented alongside their selections from the museum’s permanent collection.

Mario Ayala and Alfonso Gonzalez Jr.
Mario Ayala and Alfonso Gonzalez Jr. have worked in the same Los Angeles studio building for six years. This exhibition brings together works made between 2020 and 2026, exploring how their distinct painting practices respond to shared surroundings and visual references. The artists also selected works from the Long Beach Museum of Art’s permanent collection, creating connections across generations and opening conversations about representation, surface, and how images acquire meaning. Ayala draws on California visual traditions including muralism, tattooing, automotive painting, and commercial signage. Gonzalez’s work grows from his family’s sign-painting background and close attention to weathered public surfaces in Los Angeles. On view October 16, 2026–February 28, 2027 at the Long Beach Museum of Art, 2300 E. Ocean Boulevard, Long Beach, California. Source: Long Beach Museum of Art exhibition page.
