I'm embarrassed to say that I first watched The Lighthouse not in a grand theater or large screen tele but on a teeny iPad screen one night while I struggled to fall asleep. The experience watching it left me feeling as though I was slowly going insane. The claustrophobic nature of the film and the jittery and unnerving paranoia between Pattinson and Dafoe left my head swimming. I thought it was one I'd never watch again. But the next morning I found myself sketching Dafoe's face and thinking about nautical imagery. And then a week later I did rewatch the movie. And then twice more after that in the following month. Much of the art I end up loving most starts with an almost negative reaction to the work. This is also true for many of the bands I listen to. In the last year I've gone down an obsessive Xiu Xiu rabbit hole and have now consumed every note they have ever recorded in spite of not initially liking their music on my first listens.
