In Vincent van Gogh’s Wheat Field with Cypresses, even the sky seems to grow. Clouds curl above a band of blue mountains, while golden strokes sweep across the foreground. The Metropolitan Museum of Art dates this oil-on-canvas painting to 1889.

Follow one kind of mark

Begin with the wheat. Instead of treating it as a flat patch of yellow, look for the short strokes that lean, bend and cross. Then lift your eye to the clouds. The colors change, but the turning movement continues. Field and sky feel connected through the motion of the paint.

Find the anchor

The dark cypress on the right gives that movement something to turn around. Its upright shape cuts through the horizontal bands of land and sky. Compare its deep greens with the pale blue distance and the warm foreground: a small set of strong contrasts holds a very active surface together.

For a simple looking exercise, study the image once for color and once for direction. On the second pass, ignore what each shape represents and trace where its marks lead. The same landscape can feel surprisingly different when you pay attention to the strokes before the subject.
