Barry McGee opens Another Round tonight at Jeffrey Deitch in Los Angeles, returning to the city with a collaborative gallery takeover built around the energy of its underground art communities.
When McGee first saw Deitch's building at Santa Monica Boulevard and North Orange Drive, he asked for the keys. The gallery agreed, giving him several weeks in the former RCA Victor recording studio and room to invite artist friends to work alongside him. The resulting exhibition carries forward the improvisational, communal approach that has shaped McGee's installations for decades.
From the 99-cent store to Deitch
Another Round follows McGee's February takeover of a former 99 Cents Only Store on Wilshire Boulevard. Deitch describes the new show as an extension of that project's momentum, with McGee and his collaborators using the gallery as a living workspace rather than a finished container.
The exhibition also reconnects McGee and Deitch after more than two decades without a solo gallery presentation together. Their history reaches back to the 1990s and includes the immersive Street Market installation in Art in the Streets at MOCA Los Angeles in 2011.
A vocabulary built from the street
McGee's practice moves between tagging, finely rendered figures, geometric pattern, and assemblage. Its visual language draws from San Francisco's punk, skateboarding, surfing, underground-comics, and freight-writing cultures while remaining grounded in the people and informal networks that sustain those scenes.
